Andreu World Design Contest - FS25

Individual Project

7 weeks

Root

Andreu World is a Spanish furniture design company that specializes in seating and tables, sustainability, and precise and thoughtful design.

For this project we were tasked with designing a commercial grade chair inspired by different architectural firms that would fit within Andreu World's design language.

Modeled and Rendered in Fusion

Rooted in the logic of nature, this chair takes inspiration from the structural intelligence of plant systems. Like roots, its form balances beauty and function; Grounded, supportive, and essential.

Structure, trust, and simplicity.

Architectural firms like Jensen & Skodvin with their focus on blending nature with modern techniques heavily inspired the form and aesthetic. Architects like Tado Ando and  Steven Holl and their philosophies also helped guide the design of the chair.

Design Process

I experimented with different elements such as transparency, metal framework, textures, space, and even multi-functionality. In the end my design was a mesh of all these things tied in with Andreu World’s focus on sustainability and craftsmanship.

Inspiration

I focused on structure, contrasting materials, balancing the natural and synthetic. Exposed pipes, joinery, and supports are staples in the design language of my inspirations so I really sought to capture that.

Reflection

This was my first time designing a piece of furniture and I learned a lot about the process through this project. It was my introduction to developing commercial grade products and I learned that designing a chair is a lot harder than it looks.

My favorite (and most challenging) part of this project was building my physical model. Having to deal with issues as they came up and altering my design due to constraints was fun and very difficult but in the end I think it made me a much stronger and thoughtful designer.

The original intention was to craft the seat entirely from wood but, due to production constraints, I explored an upholstered solution that maintains the warmth and tactile quality of wood while improving comfort.

The legs are formed from wooden dowels, with the ends shaped to cup each other, echoing the structural logic of root systems. The selected fabric offers a rustic, natural texture and color palette aligning with Andreu World’s material sensibility and the quiet, grounded aesthetic of Jensen & Skodvin.
